A Progressive Transition into Middle School

Year 7 marks an important stage in a student’s educational journey. It represents both the transition from primary school to middle school and the beginning of a structured bilingual pathway. Students learn in an environment where French and English have an equal place, allowing them to progressively develop genuine confidence in both languages. The educational organisation is based on alternating half-days: lessons may be taught in French from 7:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by English instruction from 1:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. This organisation allows students to experience meaningful immersion in each language and develop their academic skills without reducing either language to simply a foreign-language subject.

Developing Academic Skills in Two Languages

In Year 7, students consolidate their foundational knowledge while gradually discovering the expectations and demands of middle school. Learning in both French and English develops reading, comprehension, written and oral expression, mathematical reasoning, scientific skills, and the ability to analyse and solve problems. Using both languages as languages of instruction also enables students to acquire the academic vocabulary needed to learn, think and communicate in different contexts. This approach encourages greater intellectual flexibility and progressively prepares students to function successfully in both French-speaking and English-speaking educational environments.

Year 7 is also a year in which students progressively learn to take responsibility for their own learning. They develop effective study methods, learn to organise their time, manage homework and projects, and use their different learning tools efficiently. The objective is not only to succeed academically during the year, but also to develop habits that will support students throughout their education. The bilingual pathway in Years 7 and 8 also gives students and their families time to observe their interests, abilities and aspirations before making more specific decisions about the next stage of their educational journey.
